History of the area

The land where the Huka Falls Resort area resides, was originally Lands & Survey farmland with the overall area labelled as “Radio Station Hill”. The former Radio Lakeland building existed to the South West side of the subdivision where it burnt down in 2010. This was the original radio station operating in Taupo.

At the entrance to Huka Falls Resort is an historic church which formed part of an historic village “Huka Village” located there from 1975 to 1994. The village housed old curiosity shops, a haberdashery, an operating blacksmith & merchant selling goods, a gallery where one could dress in vintage costume & have a portrait taken in historic settings. Horse & cart along with a vintage fire engine wheeled amongst the village. The village was a lovely place to take children to have an insight into history.
